Why Won’t My Dryer Start?

A dryer that won’t start — no response at all when you push the start button — has a broken link somewhere in the chain between the power supply and the drive motor. The fault could be in the power supply itself, a safety device, a switch, or the motor. The symptoms tell us where to start looking.

Step 1 — Check Before Calling (Free Self-Checks)

• Is the door fully latched? All dryers have a door interlock that prevents operation with the door open. Push the door firmly closed and try again.
• Check the power supply. For electric dryers, check the circuit breaker. Gas dryers use a 120V circuit — check that breaker. Also confirm the outlet is receiving power.
• For gas dryers: confirm the gas supply valve behind the unit is fully open.
• Check for a control lock / child lock. Many modern dryers have a control lock feature — check the display for a lock icon and consult your manual for how to disable it.

Cause 1 — Failed Door Switch

The door switch is the most common cause of a dryer that won’t start. It tells the control board the door is closed and safe to operate. When the switch fails, the dryer receives no signal that the door is shut — and refuses to start. A failed door switch may produce a clicking sound when you press start, or complete silence. The drum light (if your dryer has one) will still work regardless of door switch condition.

Cause 2 — Blown Thermal Fuse

A blown thermal fuse prevents the dryer from starting at all on many models — not just from heating. This is the dryer’s safety system responding to a previous overheating event, almost always caused by a restricted exhaust vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent restriction means it will blow again.

Cause 3 — Start Switch Failure

The start switch (button) can fail mechanically or electrically. When it fails, pressing it produces no response. This is less common than a door switch failure but follows the same diagnostic approach — testing continuity confirms whether the switch is functional.

Cause 4 — Motor Failure (Hums But Won’t Spin)

If the dryer hums for a moment when you press start but the drum doesn’t turn, the motor may be
running but failing to turn the drum — possibly because of a seized idler pulley, a broken drive
belt, or a failed motor start winding. A motor that hums and trips immediately usually indicates
an overload condition.

Cause 5 — Control Board Failure

Electronic control boards can fail, preventing the dryer from accepting any commands or
displaying error codes. This is less common than switch or fuse failures but becomes more likely
in older dryers or those that have experienced power surges.

Symptom-to-Cause Guide

Complete silence when pressing start → Door switch · Thermal fuse · Control board · Power supply issue Hums briefly then stops → Motor start winding failing · Seized pulley · Broken belt with motor still running Clicking when pressing start, but no response → Door switch most likely · Start switch possible Error code displayed → Control board or sensor fault — describe the code when you call Drum light works, nothing else does → Door switch (door light is on a separate circuit) · Start switch · Thermal fuse

Our Diagnostic Sequence

1. Confirm power supply (breaker, outlet, gas valve) 2. Test door switch continuity 3. Test thermal fuse continuity4. Test start switch 5. Inspect motor and drive system 6. Check control board 7. Written estimate before any repair.
