■ A burning smell from a dryer is a fire hazard. Stop the dryer and do not restart it until it has been inspected.

Gas dryers share many components with electric models — drum, motor, belt, rollers, bearings, control board — but the heating system is entirely different. Instead of a resistance heating element, a gas dryer uses a burner assembly with an igniter, gas valve, thermocouple, and flame sensor to produce heat from natural gas.

When any part of this heating system fails, the dryer typically runs — tumbles, makes noise, even feels slightly warm — but doesn’t actually heat the air enough to dry clothes. This is the most common gas dryer complaint we receive from Encinitas homeowners.

  • ✔ Dryer runs but produces no heat
  • ✔ Dryer takes too long to dry a full load
  • ✔ Gas dryer lights briefly then shuts off
  • ✔ Burning or gas smell during operation
  • ✔ Dryer overheating or shutting off early
  • ✔ Squealing, thumping, or grinding noise

What Causes a Burning Smell from a Dryer?

A burning smell from a dryer is always worth taking seriously. While some causes are less immediately dangerous than others, the dryer should be stopped and not restarted until the source has been identified and addressed.

■ Cause 1 — Lint Accumulation Near the Heating Element (Most Dangerous)

Lint that bypasses the lint trap can accumulate in the dryer cabinet — around the heating element, in the exhaust duct, or on the drum seals. Lint is highly flammable. When it contacts or gets very close to the heating element or exhaust duct, it can produce a burning odor and, in serious cases, ignite. This is the most dangerous source of dryer burning smell and the reason the U.S. Fire Administration identifies dryers as a leading cause of residential fires. Stop the dryer immediately. Do not restart until inspected.

Cause 2 — Worn or Burning Drive Belt

A drive belt that’s fraying, cracking, or slipping on the motor pulley or drum can produce a burning rubber smell. This is less immediately dangerous than a lint fire risk but indicates the belt is near failure. A belt that breaks completely will leave the dryer running (motor still on) while the drum stops turning — and may produce significant heat on the motor from a seized pulley.

Cause 3 — Overheating from Restricted Vent

A severely restricted exhaust vent causes the dryer cabinet to overheat. The high temperatures can produce a burning smell from components inside the cabinet — insulation, plastic components, or lint within the duct. The high-limit thermostat should trip to prevent fire, but a failed thermostat may not provide this protection. In Encinitas coastal homes, damp lint compaction in exhaust ducts is a particular risk factor.

Cause 4 — New Dryer or After Repair (First Use)

A mild burning smell during the first few cycles of a brand-new dryer or immediately after a heating element replacement is normal — manufacturing oils and coatings burning off. This should dissipate after 1–2 cycles. If the smell is strong, persistent, or smells like burning plastic or rubber rather than a mild chemical odor, stop the dryer and contact us.

Cause 5 — Failing Motor or Electrical Component

A burning electrical smell — distinct from burning lint or rubber — can indicate a failing motor winding, a capacitor issue, or wiring that’s overheating. This requires immediate professional inspection and the dryer should not be used until the electrical source is identified and resolved.

■ What to Do Right Now

  • Stop the dryer immediately — press the power/cancel button
  • Do not open the dryer door if you see smoke — risk of oxygen-fed flare-up
  • Move laundry away from the dryer as a precaution
  • If you see flames or sustained smoke — call 911 first

Coastal Encinitas homes — particularly in Cardiff, Leucadia, and Old Encinitas — face elevated dryer fire risk because of how the coastal environment affects lint accumulation. Damp lint compacts more densely in exhaust ducts, restricting airflow more quickly than in dry inland climates. This accelerates overheating and increases the amount of lint that can accumulate nearheat sources inside the cabinet.Annual vent cleaning is a standard recommendation everywhere. In coastal Encinitas householdswith heavy laundry use, six-month cleaning is often more appropriate.

Dryer Burning Smell — FAQ

Yes — stop the dryer immediately and do not restart it until the source has been identified. A burning smell most often indicates lint accumulation near the heating element or exhaust duct (a genuine fire hazard), a failing drive belt, or the dryer overheating from a restricted vent. In Encinitas coastal homes, lint fire risk is elevated due to faster lint accumulation in humid exhaust ducts. Call (442) 357-1020 for same-day inspection.

A burning rubber smell specifically points to the drive belt. A drive belt that’s fraying,
cracking, or slipping on a seized pulley produces a distinctive rubber-burning odor. If the drum has also slowed or stopped while the motor runs, the belt may be on the verge of breaking. Stop the dryer and have it inspected — a broken belt can cause the motor to overheat from a seized pulley.

A mild chemical or burning smell during the first 1–3 cycles of a brand-new dryer is typically normal — it’s manufacturing coatings, lubricants, and insulation burning off. This should be brief and dissipate quickly. If the smell is strong, persistent, or smells like burning plastic or rubber, stop the dryer and contact us or the manufacturer. A smell like burning lint is never normal in any dryer, new or old.

A dryer fire or pre-fire lint smoldering smells like burning paper or fabric — similar to leaving something in contact with a hot surface. It’s distinct from a burning rubber smell (drive belt) or a chemical burning smell (new appliance). If you smell something burning and see any smoke, exit the area and call 911 — do not open the dryer. If no smoke is present, stop the dryer, leave the door closed, and call (442) 357-1020 for emergency inspection.

Do not use the dryer until it has been inspected. Same-day emergency service available.
