What Does the Noise Tell You?

Dryer noise is diagnostic information. The type of sound — squealing, thumping, grinding, rattling — typically points to a specific component or failure mode. Unlike heating problems, mechanical noise issues don’t usually fix themselves; they worsen over time as the failing component puts additional stress on other parts of the drive system.

Squealing or High-Pitched Squeaking

Most likely cause: worn drum rollers or a failing idler pulley. The drum rollers support the
drum as it rotates; when their bearings wear out, they produce a high-pitched squeal. The idler
pulley keeps tension on the drive belt — a worn pulley bearing makes a similar sound. Both worsen under load (full drum) and early in a cycle when the bearing is cold.

Thumping or Rhythmic Banging

Most likely cause: worn drum rollers (flat spots) or a damaged drive belt. Drum rollers that have developed flat spots create a rhythmic thump — once per revolution of the drum — as the flat portion contacts the drum. A drive belt that’s fraying or has a damaged section can also produce irregular thumping. This is distinct from the sound of a heavy or unbalanced load shifting in the drum.

Grinding or Scraping

Most likely cause: worn drum glides (bearing pads) or a drum bearing failure. The drum sits on felt or plastic glides at the front of the cabinet and a bearing at the rear. When these wear through, the metal drum begins contacting the metal cabinet — producing a grinding or scraping sound. Left unaddressed, this can damage the drum itself. This sound is more common in older dryers and typically worsens progressively.

Rattling or Clanking

Usually: objects in the drum or a loose component. Coins, buttons, belt buckles, or other items in pockets commonly cause rattling. If the rattling continues with an empty drum, check for loose screws or panels, a foreign object in the blower wheel, or a failing blower wheel itself.

Loud Motor Hum or Vibration

Could indicate: a failing drive motor or blower wheel obstruction. Motors that are beginning to
fail often run loudly or vibrate excessively. A blower wheel with lint accumulation or a foreign
object also causes increased motor load and noise.

Components We Test and Replace

  • ✔Idler pulley — maintains belt tension; worn bearing produces squealing, often speed-dependent
  • ✔Drive belt — transfers motor power to drum; a worn or fraying belt thumps or may break
  • ✔Drum bearing — rear drum support; failure causes grinding, especially empty or under light loads
  • ✔Drum glides / felt seals — front drum support pads; worn glides produce grinding or scraping
  • ✔Blower wheel — obstruction or damage causes noise and airflow reduction
  • ✔Drive motor — failing motors produce hum, vibration, or intermittent noise

Don’t Ignore Dryer Noise: Mechanical noise problems don’t resolve on their own. A worn idler pulley that squeals today will eventually seize — snapping the drive belt and leaving you with a dryer that won’t turn at all. Addressing noise early is always less expensive than waiting for a complete mechanical failure. Call (442) 357-1020.

Dryer Noise — FAQ

A gas dryer produces combustion byproducts including CO, which normally exit through the exhaust vent. When operating correctly with an unobstructed vent, the risk is minimal. If the vent is blocked or the dryer is malfunctioning, combustion gases may not exhaust properly. We recommenda working CO detector in any area with gas appliances and check exhaust airflow on every gas dryer visit.

Squealing is most commonly caused by worn drum rollers or a failing idler pulley bearing. The drum rollers support the drum as it rotates; when their inner bearings wear out, they produce a high-pitched squeal — often worse when cold or under heavy loads. The idler pulley (which keeps the drive belt tensioned) produces a similar sound when its bearing fails. Both are repairable without replacing the entire dryer.

A rhythmic thumping — once per drum revolution — is the signature of drum rollers that have developed flat spots from extended use. A damaged or fraying drive belt can also cause irregular thumping. If the thumping only happens with heavy loads and stops with light loads, an unbalanced laundry load may be contributing — but mechanical wear is usually also present.

Depends on the noise. Rattling from objects in the drum (coins, buttons) is harmless. A burning smell accompanying noise is not — stop the dryer immediately. Squealing, thumping, or grinding that comes from the mechanical drive system will worsen over time and eventually cause a more serious failure. A worn idler pulley that’s squealing will eventually seize, snapping the drive belt. It’s always less expensive to repair early. Call (442) 357-1020 to schedule.
